Quick Guide:

If you are new to working with unspun wool, you might be wondering what these terms mean and how they work. Here is the simple breakdown:

What is a "Sliver"?
Think of a sliver (pronounced sly-ver) as a long, continuous, fluffy cloud of wool. Instead of being spun tightly into a strand of yarn, the fibers are cleaned, combed, and laid neatly together in one direction. It arrives in a beautiful braid to keep it tangle-free. Because it is unspun, it is incredibly versatile—you can spin it, felt it, or use it for thrumming!

What is "Thrumming"?
Thrumming is a traditional Newfoundland knitting technique used to super warm and windproof mittens, sock/slippers and hats.
  • The Process: As you knit a pair of mittens, socks, or slippers, you take small pinches of this unspun Merino sliver (called "thrums") and knit them directly into your stitches alongside your regular yarn. The Look: On the outside of your project, the thrums look like cute little hearts or V-shaped pops of color.
  • The Magic Inside: On the inside, the loose wool ends felt into a thick, ultra-plush, fuzzy fleece lining.
  • The Finished Result: As you wear your mittens or slippers, the heat and friction from your hands or feet naturally felt the wool down. Over time, it molds perfectly to your body and creates a completely windproof, super-insulated barrier against the winter cold!
