Developed in collaboration with Nova Scotia’s Fleece Artist & Hand Maiden, this custom shade reflects the traditional gold, green and red of our provincial tartan.

Expertly hand-dyed on the decadent Hand Maiden Casbah base—this cozy blend of 80% superwash Merino wool, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon is ideal for heirloom socks and scarves, warm shawls, or cozy winter accessories.

History of the Newfoundland Tartan

The official Newfoundland and Labrador tartan was created in 1955 by St. John’s Water Street shopkeeper Samuel Wilansky. Inspired by Sir Cavendish Boyle’s provincial anthem, Ode to Newfoundland,he designed the pattern to capture the island’s natural beauty and history in woven thread. It was officially registered with the Court of the Lord Lyon, King of Arms of Scotland, in 1973 (International Tartan Index No. 1543).

Each color in the tartan holds specific symbolism:

• Green: Represents the pine-clad hills.
• Gold: Represents the sun’s rays crowning the landscape.
• White: Represents the winter "cloak of shimmering white" snow and ice.
• Brown: Honours the mineral wealth of the "Iron Isle" (Bell Island).
• Red: Commemorates the Royal Standard.
