KNITTING & YARNS

In Newfoundland and Labrador, storytelling is a way of life – from the songs we sing to the jokes we tell, even the conversations we have around the dinner table at the end of the day. And as knitters, those stories get woven into every piece we create and wear (or pass on to someone else). This year our retreat will focus on the power of storytelling and the impact it has on our craft, exploring how stories influence design, and sharing some of our own stories as well!

Instructor: Katie Noseworthy

Knitting and Yarn enthusiast turned designer Katie Noseworthy loves to spread the joy of knitting through elegant, contemporary patterns. Designing since 2017, she has successfully published over two dozen patterns and has been featured in collections published by KnitPicks and A Needle Pulling Thread Magazine. In 2023, Katie published her very first book Newfoundland Knits for Little Ones: 15 original patterns designed for children.

Katie lives in Newfoundland with her husband, toddler, and dog, and is rarely found without a project in tow. Occasionally, Katie puts her knitting down to enjoy a good book or a night out.

About the Design: “Marguerite”

“Marguerite” is a DK weight shawl inspired by the historical figure of the same name, who, in 1542, was abandoned on the Île des Démons (now known as Quirpon, an island off the coast of the Northern Peninsula) while en route to Quebec. The shawl features a mixture of garter and lace designs, symbolic of the strength and femininity Marguerite represents. The pattern includes both charted and written instructions, with an easy-to-remember lace repeat throughout.

Like many Newfoundland stories, this one has become a song! Have a listen to The Once’s version of “Marguerite” HERE
